This is a great effect from Richard Sanders. I don’t know how many really unique ideas Richard Sanders has because he seems to create a lot of effects based on other people’s ideas. This effect has roots in Paul Harris’ Anything Deck from Art of Astonishment Vol 3, and there have been a number of other similar effects using the same basic principle such as: Deep Astonishment, Carpe Cajones, Deep 3, etc.
In some ways Any Card is most similar in effect to R. Paul Wilson’s Psycho Killer routine that comes with his Predator Wallet. Of course one uses a deck of cards and the other uses a wallet with bank notes, but if you look at the routines there is a strong similarity to the overall effect. They both feature a sucker element which is actually key to the method and they also end with the surprise writing of the thought of card on the back of the cards or the bills. So if you have the Predator Wallet you would probably not perform Any Card.
The way Richard has streamlined the routine for Any Card makes it all pretty easy to learn and perform, and once you have spent the thirty minutes setting up the deck you should be good for many performances. The online videos are broken up nicely and easy to follow.
The only thing that disappointed me is that Richard seems to credit no one for the idea of this effect. He even talks at length about how he treats the deck and in what he calls the “Easy Spread Method“, and presents this as a great new idea, but it almost exactly the same as a method that Joe Berg and Al Aldini use for their DeckMaster deck in their book Rough Stuff called Super-Roughing and this was published in 1956.
So although I do like this effect a lot, I would like it more if Richard would credit some of his sources and inspirations.
Effect: Hand a deck of cards to someone and ask them to think of Any Card (no force). You explain that you previously turned over the 4 aces in the deck because you’re sure that they are thinking of an Ace. They say no, they’re thinking of the 3 of Hearts! You explain that there’s another important reason why you turned over the Aces, they’re marked. You slowly turn over the Aces revealing a word printed on each card…The Three Of Hearts! Their freely thought-of card!
