Bob Kline crafted only eight of these exquisite frames. Initially, when I received it, I had a suspicion that it might be the work of Eddy Taytelbaum, given its exceptional craftsmanship. However, upon examining Dr. Albo’s Volume 10 photos, it became clear that they were distinct. To confirm, I reached out to Gene Gonzalez, a renowned Taytelbaum expert, who promptly confirmed that it was not created by Eddy.
To delve deeper, I consulted Bill King’s comprehensive book on Bob Kline and discovered a clear photo and description of the frame. What made it a bit challenging to identify was that Bob referred to it not as a Slat Frame but as a Slot Frame.
What’s particularly appealing about this frame, akin to the Taytelbaum versions, is that the frame itself opens up, allowing for a cleaner display. I’ve leveraged this feature to great advantage in my routine. Most of the frames I’ve encountered, such as the Joe Berg and Owen’s ones, are fixed without an opening, unlike this one.
When selecting a routine for this frame, I aimed for simplicity and cleanliness. Working with Jumbo cards requires caution since even basic moves can be challenging or raise suspicion due to their size. After devising my routine, I tested it on my wife, who is a discerning critic, and she not only liked it but also didn’t question any of my actions.
The routine is remarkably straightforward, requires no setup, and is always ready to go. I’m delighted with the positive response from my wife. So when you watch the Speed Demo, rest assured that it has received the coveted “wife approval.”
Effect: In this captivating routine with a jumbo deck of cards, the magician begins by showing that the cards are different and even offers to shuffle them if desired. A spectator is asked to select any card and place it face down on the table, signifying it as a special card to be kept safe.
Next, the magician introduces a frame, stating, “As you can see, it is clearly empty,” while demonstrating this by wiggling their fingers in the slots. The magician adds, “But just in case you don’t trust me, we can open the whole frame up to see that it is completely empty.”
The selected jumbo card is then placed face down in the frame, which is subsequently closed and set back down on the table. The magician randomly chooses another card from the jumbo deck, placing it face down on the table, and remarks, “My card is not interesting, but your card is. I’ve chosen the Four of Hearts, for instance. Do you recall your card?”
To reveal the climax, the magician continues, “Let’s find out – oh, look, it’s the Jack of Hearts.” With a touch of drama, the magician picks up the frame and instructs, “The Jack of Hearts is a very special card. On the count of three, please blow… 1 … 2 … 3!” As the audience blows, the card within the frame visibly transforms into the performer’s card (the Four of Hearts), and the face-down card on the table is flipped to reveal it’s now the Jack of Hearts.
The Four of Hearts is then removed from the frame, which remains visibly empty, concluding the astonishing performance with a memorable twist.
The Slot Frame is an elegant piece in green and gold, complete with a felt pouch. This substantial frame is designed to accommodate jumbo-sized cards. The magician begins by displaying the frame with a card visible inside. Notably, both the front and back of the card can be shown.
Then, with a flourish, the frame is opened, revealing a surprising transformation: the original card has magically changed into an entirely different jumbo-sized card. This newly produced card can be removed from the frame and displayed to the audience, showing both its front and back.
The dimensions of the frame are 7 1/2″ x 6″.
