Description
This clever item created by Floyd Thayer first appeared in the Thayer Catalog No. 5 c. 1921 and although the props can be thoroughly examined both before and after the effect this little miracle is easy to do.
There is one simple switch but it is done when their guard is totally down and there is zero heat on you. The practice required is to make the actual appearance under the hanky as quick as possible – you want to try to avoid to be under there for too long 🙂
I will say this is the second Thayer prop I have added (the previous one being Baffo) requiring a borrowed ring and the ad copy completely ignores the fact that the ring being used is actually switched. Maybe in the 1920’s everyone had pretty much the same wedding bands? These days you would be better offer just using the provided rings and not bother to switch them, unless you know for sure your ring is very similar. It still looks like a miracle because everything apparently can be examined.
Includes:
- Excelsior Rod and two black balls.
- Two white balls.
- Two rings.
- Copy of Instructions
- Perfectly sized hanky (bonus).
- Paper bag used in the video for hands off performance (bonus).
- Extra routine: King Tuts Wand, published in The Magical Bulletin June, 1923 (bonus).
Notice: Use your favorite method to vanish the ring – the wand is not included.
Notice: both of the outer black balls were very stiff and I only removed one for the effect. You probably could force the second one off, but since you only need one for the effect I did not bother to force the other. Also the white ball(s) have been re-sprayed as they had quite a few pieces of flaking paint. But they look fine and now it much harder to spot any changes now. After working on the video there is more wear and tear on the black rod, but if desired it would be an easy matter to respray this black.
Effect: An exceptionally neat parlor trick, which requires just a little skill in presenting, just enough to1 make it one of the best for parlor, church or stage use that could be desired.
The apparatus consists of a neat polished rod, tipped on the ends with removable ebonized balls or knobs and a solid wooden ball with a hole through the center for the purpose of allowing the ball to be passed upon the rod. All these parts will permit the closest examination.
On taking the rod in his hands the performer removes one of the knobs from the end of the rod and slides the solid ball onto the rod and at once replaces the knob. In this condition the whole is handed to a spectator to grasp both ends of the rod, so that it is impossible to remove the solid ball or place anything on the rod.
A borrowed handkerchief is then thrown over the rod and ball in such a position so as to leave both ends exposed to view during the trick.
Next a ring is borrowed and caused to vanish, only to appear on the rod held by the spectator, the ball dropping to the floor. The ring is removed and returned to the owner and again the entire rod, ball and knobs are offered for examination.
This charming trick cannot fail to please the most exacting.
Thayer quality, with instructions for working.
