Here is another rare Collectors’ Workshop item from the early days of Rich and Nick. When you first get this you may not be sure about it, but if you read the brief instructions and try it out, I’m sure you will love it. It is a great gimmick and a clever easy to do effect.
The ad copy says no sleights which is true except for the initial switch if you borrow the nickle.

Effect: SIMON’S QUEST – AN AMAZING COIN TRICK WILL ASTOUND FRIENDS
When I was a child, I used to read the classified section of Popular Mechanics. There was always a spellbinding effect that read like that. So I ordered it. It was a hook coin which I promptly tossed in what was to become my “forgotten drawer.”
But the dream was worth pursuing. Now, Collectors’ Workshop presents something that comes doggone close to realizing that dream. It’s too good for the Popular Mechanics ads. Consider the setting: you arc sitting quietly in a group, when someone makes the request you have been waiting for all evening: “Do some magic for us, will you?” Smiling broadly, but apologetically, you indicate you have no effects with you. But perhaps you could attempt an experiment. Could the spectator lend you a coin-any coin?
Spectator docs so–assume it is a nickel. Spectator is also requested to supply a handkerchief.
Now read this. Performer places nickel on his outstretched palm. Spectator places handkerchief over performer’s palm. Performer’s hand remains absolutely motionless. Spectator is requested to snap his fingers over the handkerchief then to whip the handkerchief away. When he docs so, the nickel is a penny!
Again, spectator is asked to replace the handkerchief, snap his fingers and whip the handkerchief away from the performer’s motionless hand. This done, the penny has changed to a quarter.
Big spenders will now return the quarter to the spectator, together with appropriate observations on how this is better than the stock market. The more penurious amongst us will transform the quarter back to the nickel visibly if you wish.
Remember:
- no sleights (except for the switch when you start)
- no shells,
- no loops or threads,
- no setup whatsoever,
- start clean,
- end clean.
