Description
Since 2016, Mad Jake Jr. and his brother Frederick have been growing their company Airship Magic into a successful magic manufacturing and distribution company. Jake focuses mainly on the metal and coin work and Frederick on the wood work and turning. They also collaborate with smaller, and often unknown, craftsmen to bring a unique line of magic that you rarely find elsewhere in the industry. Their commitment to quality and innovation is high and I’ve been very happy with the products I have purchased from them directly and through Stevens Magic. Just browsing through their website you will find all sorts of cool items that you won’t find elsewhere.
This item is my favorite version of Magiro’s beautiful classic Hydro Die and unlike many of the others that have been released over the years this version stays true to the small form factor that is so key to the success of this illusion. Although some builders, notably Magic Wagon and also Jake Jr. himself have created some very popular versions, to my mind they are too ornate and large which detracts from the actual simplicity and beauty of the illusion.
This one built by Frederick is perfect and works smoother than even the original. It uses a nice blood wood base and lid to keep collectors happy, but otherwise closely follows Magiro’s original. It works perfectly.
Effect: All of the pieces can be examined, then the die is placed at the bottom of the clear perspex tube which is sealed at one end and this is placed on top of a thin base. The tube is then filled with water, or as sometimes is used in the patter some special acidic dissolving liquid. Everyone can see the die at the bottom of the clear tube. Now this tube is covered with an opaque cover which has a separate lid, and before the lid is placed on top to seal the die away from all, the spectator can look right down from the top to see the die still there. Even after the top has been placed on the cover, the cover is lifted one more time to show the die is still there.
Now the performer just holds the tube at the very top, nowhere near the die and lifts it away from the base and waves it in front of the spectator and asks them to blow. Then in an instant the cover is lifted and the die has gone. The water is still in the tube. Each piece of apparatus is now shown on all sides and there is nothing to find – the die has disappeared!
All assembled the Hydro Dies are just under 5″ in height. The base is solid and 2 1/8″ in diameter.
This exotic hardwood model is turned from Red Heart. it’s been finished to a smooth glass finish using only the best oil and waxes.
